GENERAL INFORMATION

The Fourth Annual José Iturbi International Music Competition will be held in Los Angeles, California, from
June 14 to 19, 2010, under the auspices of the José Iturbi Foundation.

Contestants’ Orientation/Registration Meeting - June 13, 2010, from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Contestants will register and participate in the drawing of numbers to determine the competition performance order which will be adhered to for all rounds of the competition. The meeting is mandatory for all contestants.

Contestants who do not have a current United States Passport or visa:
-
Contestants traveling from outside the United States will be responsible for acquiring their own passports and visas.

Contestants should consult the nearest American Embassy or Consulate for advice immediately upon notification of acceptance into the competition.

Two formal letters of invitation will be mailed to you by regular mail within one week of your acceptance that you may attach to your passport or visa application.

The José Iturbi Foundation will not be responsible for any further facilitation of your application.

Contestants must not have any other professional commitments during the time of the competition.

Contestants will be responsible for their own accommodations.

Contestants who are not participating in the Semi-Final or Final Rounds of the competition are not required to stay until the end of the competition, although they are strongly encouraged to do so.

Any cost incurred by changing dates of travel will be at the contestant’s expense.

To qualify for Best American, Best Spanish, and/or President’s Prize, contestants must be present at the Awards Ceremony after the Final Round when all the winners are announced.

RULES FOR APPLICATION

The Fourth Annual José Iturbi International Music Competition is open to pianists and singers of all nationalities. First prize winners of previous José Iturbi International Music Competitions are not eligible to compete.
Applicants must be no younger than 17 and no older than 32 on June 1, 2010.

The Application Form may be submitted by post or by email. It must be completed and received with all necessary attachments and supplemental materials along with the application fee of $100 US
by the José Iturbi Foundation no later than May 1, 2010.

The following materials must accompany each Application. You may mail physical copies by post to:

Pianists: DVD made within the last calendar year of at least 20 minutes and no longer than 45 minutes in length. The repertoire will consist of works chosen by the applicant and may be selected from works offered for the Preliminary, Semi-Final and Final Round recitals. A minimum of 4 different selections must be performed. These selections may be single works and/or a movement from a larger work.
Mark the DVD with your name and send it with the list of tracks and selections.
Singers: DVD made within the last calendar year of of two (2) arias and one (1) art song from the standard repertory.
Selections submitted may be part of competition repertoire list.

A photocopy of your birth certificate, passport, driver’s license or equivalent proof of age

A current resumé.

A current biography of 200 words or less, written in a formal manner that is edited and ready to be printed in the competition program and website should you be chosen to participate as a contestant in the competition.

Complete repertoire for the competition, listed in performance order.

Copies of two full recital programs performed within the last 3 years.

A personal statement about what the applicant hopes to achieve by entering the competition (between 100 and 150 words.) It must be written in English, or an English translation must be provided.

If you are chosen to be one of the 24 contestants in piano or voice, you will need to send us five different color photographs, preferably in digital format with a resolution of 300 dpi, that may include one current color headshot, a performance photo, an awards ceremony showing contestant receiving award prize, or any personal photos suitable for publicity purposes. These can be submitted on CD, emailed to the Foundation, or physical copies can be mailed.

All applicants must submit a nonrefundable application fee of $100 US by PayPal, certified check, money order, or Western Union, made payable to the José Iturbi Foundation and received by the José Iturbi Foundation no later than May 1, 2010.

Applicants must supply the following recommendation letters to be received by May 1st.

A recommendation letter from a recent or current teacher. This letter must be written to specifically recommend the applicant to the Fourth José Iturbi International Music Competition.

A recommendation letter from a musician or musicians of acknowledged international standing. Recommendation letters are to be mailed by the above people directly to the José Iturbi Foundation or by email to mlands@iturbifoundation.com

Applicants must retain copies of all material sent with their applications. The José Iturbi Foundation will not accept responsibility for lost documents.

An acknowledgement will be sent to each applicant upon receipt of the completed Application Form and all attachments and supplemental materials. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

All applications will be reviewed by the Competition Artistic Committee and treated as confidential. The Committee may request additional information from or about an applicant. All accepted contestants, including alternates, will be notified no later than May 5, 2010. The 24 pianists and 24 singers will be announced to the public on the José Iturbi Foundation website.

RULES AND PROCEDURES FOR THE COMPETITION

The competition will consist of three separate rounds: Preliminary, Semi-Final, and Final.

The jury will not advance more than twelve (12) pianists and twelve (12) singers to the Semi-Final Round, or more than six (6) pianists and six (6) singers to the Final Round.

The order of appearance of pianists and singers in all rounds will be determined by the contestant’s drawing at Orientation on Sunday, June 13, 2010, that is mandatory for all contestants. The performance order will be adhered to throughout all rounds of the competition except, at the discretion of the chairman of the jury, for reasons of accident, illness, or other unusual circumstances.

After the contestants have drawn their numbers for their order in the competition at Orientation, pianists will be assigned practice times and singers will meet with their accompanists and will be assigned rehearsal times.

All phases of the Competition will be open to the public.

Contestant will receive a CD recording of his/her performance after each round.

All rounds of the competition may be broadcast live or may be recorded and videotaped for subsequent broadcast, video, or audio recording use. It is anticipated that a CD recording of selected competition performances will be commercially produced, that a documentary of the competition incorporating selected performances will be produced for television, and that parts of all of the competition will be made available on the internet. Camera crews may photograph all competition events. Neither the José Iturbi Foundation nor its assignees or licensees may be held liable for any payments to pianists or singers arising out of materials derived from competition performances. Applicants are required to sign a release form yielding all rights on such materials to the José Iturbi Foundation, its assignees, or licensees.

Contestants may not contact or speak with any member of the jury during their active participation in the competition. Any violation of this rule may disqualify the contestant.

All decisions of the jury are final and may not be disputed.

RULES RELATED TO PRIZES AND ENGAGEMENTS

All prizes will be announced at the awards ceremony at the end of the final rounds. It is the responsibility of the winner to confirm that the foundation has their correct banking, mailing and tax information within 2 days of the Awards Ceremony. Upon receipt of this information, all prize money will be mailed to the winners within 45 days.

The prizes and awards specified on the José Iturbi Foundation website will constitute the only prizes and awards of the Fourth José Iturbi International Music Competition. No other prizes, awards, or remuneration will be permitted, except by express decision of the José Iturbi Foundation.

Taxes will be deducted from prizes according to U.S. tax laws in effect at the time of the competition.

The First, Second, and Third Prize winners will, if requested, perform one recital without charge for the benefit of the José Iturbi Foundation.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS
Preliminary Round
Piano:
Each contestant will perform a program of no less than 17 minutes and no more than 20 minutes in length which must include: one work by Bach, an Etude by Chopin and an Etude by Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Bartok, Ligeti and/or a Toccata by Czerny, Schumann, Ravel, Khachaturian or Prokofiev. Only complete works will be accepted.
Voice:
Each contestant will perform one aria of his/her own choice, one aria of the judges’ choice and one art song of his/her choice in a language other than Spanish.
Semi-Final Round
Piano:
Each contestant will perform a program of no less than 42 minutes and no more than 45 minutes which must include: a complete sonata by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann or Brahms, a Prelude, Mazurka or Nocturne by Chopin, and one Spanish work. The balance of the allotted time is to be filled with a Prelude by Debussy or a work by Ravel. Repertoire from the Preliminary Round may not be repeated.
Voice:
Each contestant will perform one aria of the judges’ choice, one art song in a language other than Spanish (not sung in the Preliminary Round), one Spanish art song, Verse 2 of Ave Maria, Ellen’s Dritter Gesang, by Schubert and one song by Gershwin or Porter of his/her own choice. Repertoire from the Preliminary Round may not be repeated.
Final Round
Piano - Afternoon Session:
Each contestant will perform a program of no less than 27 minutes and no more than 30 minutes which must include: a work or group of pieces by Rachmaninoff and/or Liszt including transcriptions and one Spanish work. The balance of the allotted time is to be filled with the applicant’s choice of repertoire. Repertoire from the Preliminary and Semi-Final Rounds may not be repeated.
Piano - Evening Session:
Each contestant will perform a program of no less than 17 minutes and no more than 20 minutes which must include: a Gershwin song transcribed by Gershwin, and/or the contestant, one Spanish work, a work by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff or Brahms and one virtuoso “Encore” piece.
Voice:
Each singer will perform one aria of the judges’ choice, to be selected after the Semi-Final round which may be repeated from a prior round, one Spanish Art Song, one song by Gershwin or Porter, not sung in the Semi-Final round, one Russian song chosen from the required list of composers, one song from the Broadway/Musical Theatre repertoire chosen from the required list and one dynamic and exciting “Encore” piece of the singer’s choice.

RULES AND PROCEDURES RELATING TO REPERTOIRE

Performance times will be strictly enforced. Repeats are at the discretion of the pianist. The jury retains the right to stop a performance if the contestant exceeds the allotted time.

If requested, contestants must supply a copy of the edition of the score used in the preparation of each work performed to the chairman of the jury.

No changes in repertoire will be accepted after May 15, 2010.

If you were a contestant in piano in a previous José Iturbi International Music Competition, you may repeat only two (2) major works of 10 minutes or longer and three (3) shorter works, for a total of five (5) works. The "Encore" piece played in the evening session of the final round must be new for the 2010 competition.
If you were a contestant in voice in a previous José Iturbi International Music Competition, you may repeat only 5 selections. The Porter and Gershwin songs, the art songs in Spanish and the "Encore" piece must be new for the 2010 competition.
